Dining Room Design Ideas

Over the years as an interior designer, I have collected a multitude of resources in order to present a wide variety of concepts to my clients. Personal preferences in regards to the design elements in one’s home can be diverse. It is my hope that the following curated images well help pull together inspiration and ideas to help others create the ultimate dining room. Whether you wish to create a modern, contemporary, traditional, rustic or eclectic dining room it is essential to have some sort of feel for the patterns, prints, colors and texture you’d like to incorporate into the space. Are you looking for a round table or square? Is the dining room part of the kitchen or a separate entity? Is the dining room space small or large? Regardless of size, it is easy to turn a dining room into a focal point with simple style and fabulous design elements.

Another great source of inspiration for me has been my Stunning Home Decor & Design board on Pinterest. It is a collaborative board, and those pinning to it really have an exceptional eye for detail! With over 27,000 followers, it provides a constant stream of gorgeous interiors. I’ve used many of the ideas presented in various applications in my own home. At the bottom of this page are a series of images optimized for my Pinterest friends, as well as a Dining Room Furniture Resource Directory.

Enjoy!

Black & White Dining Room

Black & White Dining Room Design

Scarlet walls in a dining room add drama and warmth, and the reflected glow makes everyone look FABulous! Haute House does a typically glam makeover of the classic Tuscan farmhouse table, adding cabriole legs and ball-and-claw feet to the simple slab surface. The Kayla zebra-print linen host chairs add a glamorous contrast. The abstract giclee “Come Fly With Me’ gives this neutral palette a contemporary edge. I love the pale silver Charlie rug that adds a subtle shimmer to the alternating chevron pattern. The traditional Astrid chandelier is a lovely finishing touch, although one could also go for a more modern approach to the lighting as well.

Gallery Dining Room

The collection of seven giclee prints create an instant gallery that is striking against midnight-blue walls. Allerton furniture proves the power of simplicity in ribbon-stripe mahogany with self-piped cream upholstery. Global Views’ Gray Abstract wool rug, dyed by hand, adds a subtle fretwork pattern. Faceted crystals sparkle beneath the Fascination chandelier’s drum shade trimmed in chrome-finished metal. The Manhattan console does double-duty as a sideboard; its faux-leather panels and nickel-finish hardware echo the room’s tones and finishes. The Kalena silver-plate/crystal buffet lamp and Margaux Venetian mirror complete the look.

The Taylor Dining Room

Taylor Dining Room Design

This formal dining room exhales with touches of jute, crisp linen, pale wood, and midcentury-mod lighting. The hand-braided jute rug scores high on style and sustainability. Combined with the rustic brick-and-plaster walls, it grounds the room with a casual ambiance. The Taylor pedestal table and Waycroft linen chairs would be at home in a more formal setting, but here their washed, weathered finishes contribute to the relaxed mood. The Orbit pendant from Regina-Andrew has a classic midcentury vibe that is amazingly versatile. The chain-link mirror has a hand-applied silver metallic gleam. And instead of traditional flowers, tall, graceful branches work well with the Morph recycled-glass vase.

Donabella Dining Room

Donabella Dining Room

The timeless appeal of a trestle table gets an elegant upgrade with Donabella’s scrolled base and carved beveled edge. Tufted host chairs in a modified wing style share nailhead trim with coordinating side chairs; the pale taupe fabric has a subtle texture for added sophistication. The Tribute Medallion rug adds a splash of rich color. Graceful loops and scrolls lighten the look of the steel French Umber chandelier. On the table: new Harvest dinnerware, Napoli flatware, and Sferra hemstitched linens in Oyster.

Eclectic Dining Room

Eclectic Dining Room

The best dinner parties are less about food, much more about people and conversation. Lesson 1: A round table makes conversation easier because you can all see each other. Lesson 2: Comfy seating is a must. The ‘Twine’ pedestal table is a beautifully scaled, almost sculptural piece of cherrywood with metal scrollwork beneath the glass top. The chairs and gently curved two-person banquettes have cushioned seats and backs for stay-awhile comfort. The ‘Overjoyed’ abstract prints and the Regina-Andrew orbit-shade chandelier balance the furniture’s traditional style.

Best surprise: the impact of overlapping rugs in high-contrast styles. ‘Oceanside Oushak’ picks up the muted golden yellow of the seating, while the ‘Zebra’ hairhide balances the dark wood and adds riveting shape and texture.

Loft Dining Room

This look would work in a traditional setting, but it also goes well with the contrast of a vintage-look table and formal chairs with industrial-chic surroundings. Handcrafted of reclaimed pine, the dual-pedestal table has a rustic bleached finish. It’s a terrific counterpoint to the colorful “Micha” wing chairs and skirted Parsons-style “Havana” chairs upholstered in pale cotton duck. Regina-Andrew’s turquoise beaded chandelier echoes the chairs’ medallion print, and Carol Benson-Cobb’s “Driven” ink-on-canvas provides an artful finishing touch.

Madison Avenue Dining Room

Madison Avenue Dining Room

Creamy white, shimmering accents, and a hand-cut crystal chandelier take the edge off midcentury modern in this glamorous room. Bernhardt’s Leslie furniture collection includes a table with faux-shagreen inlay, chairs with a circle-in-the-square back, and a four-door buffet with iridescent capiz-shell insets. The silver Glistening Ridge rug is hand-loomed viscose for a subtle shimmer. The nine-light chandelier has a polished chrome finish and dozens of hand-cut crystal drops and beads for maximum sparkle. Behind a popup bar on a tray, a beveled mirror framed in more mirrored panels reflects the light and the festivities. The lone pop of color: crimson peonies.

Ronan Dining Collection

This heirloom-style table features durable hardwood construction with a neat apron, classically turned pedestal base, scrolled legs and deep, rich stained finish. Just add the center leaf to convert from a handsome four-top to dining for six.

Marchella Dining Room Collection

Rustic and civilized all at once. With a fine-grained top, sturdy hardwood base and whimsical scrolled legs, the hand-finished Marchella is über-inviting. Pair with matching chairs, or mix things up for a cheerful, eclectic look. Accommodates four with a big warm hug.

Griffin Dining Room Collection: Pairing steel with reclaimed pine, this table is a striking centerpiece for entertaining. Saw marks and hand planing lend a roughhewn look to the thick top.

Grayson Chairs: The classic Parsons-style chair gets an update with the addition of leather in rich, saturated hues. Thickly padded Grayson Chair has a solid hardwood frame that’s expertly crafted to last for generations.

Sumner Dining Room Collection: A rustic finish brings unparalleled warmth to this table. The wood is weathered and distressed to reveal its knots and grain pattern, and has visible marks and cutouts for a vintage look.

Seagrass Chairs: Incredibly durable, renewable, and rich in tonal variation, seagrass and abaca bring relaxed style to the dining room. Cast a warm glow over a room with the Veranda Linear Chandelier.

Cortona Extending Dining Table: Crafted with the bold scale and detail of Spanish revival furniture, this table was designed for lively celebrations where there’s always room for one more guest.

Hayes Tufted Chairs: Inspire guests to linger long after the last course. Designed with deep button tufting and a barrel-curved back, this chair offers unparalleled comfort and style.

Tivoli Extending Pedestal Dining Table, Camilla 6-Arm Chandelier, Cecil Rug and Napoleon Chairs: With its round top and scrolling base, this table is a beautiful setting for mealtime gatherings. A pedestal design maximizes legroom, making it ideal for smaller dining spaces. A drop-in leaf increases the extending table’s length.
